Centenary Exhibition

An exhibition marking a hundred years of Australia’s oldest student publication, at the George Paton Gallery.

2025 marked the centenary of Farrago, Australia’s oldest student publication and a part of the University of Melbourne’s creative and political life since 1925. Over ten decades it has published radical polemics, poetry, photo essays, satire and student reportage.

Farrago 100 revisited that history through archival material, ephemera and contemporary responses. Running from the underground press politics of the 1960s to today’s digital-first publishing and podcasting, the exhibition considered Farrago’s changing form, voice and purpose within broader shifts in student experience, media culture and campus activism.

The show brought together front covers from across the hundred years alongside memorabilia and video footage from the archive. Art Guide Australia covered the exhibition in its piece on Farrago and the pressures facing print publishing.
